You certainly don't want it to take up the entire wall, while, at the same time, be sure the size that you choose is worthy of the space and will not disappear into the abyss, so to speak. As a general rule of thumb to follow, it should should take up a maximum of one-third of the wall space, as long as there is not excessive furniture against that wall or lots of other decor on the wall.
